How to overcome a mental block: 4 really effective tips

how to overcome a mental block

In this article, you will discover useful tips on how to overcome a mental block.

If you are not getting the results you want in your life, the reason is often not to be found in your abilities.

The ability to use your mind to your advantage is essential if you want to grow and achieve your work and personal goals.

Here are some effective tips to help you make faster progress and create a life consistent with your wants and needs.

1 – Become aware of your beliefs

We think we are completely rational people, able to analyze every detail of a given situation before making the right decision.

In reality, this is not entirely accurate, because most of the time we make decisions based on what is true for us.

Therefore, it is not the reality of the facts that guide our choices, but rather our beliefs about a given situation.

Understanding this is essential to begin to take back control of your life.

What can you do to begin to become the captain of your life again and steer your ship in the direction you desire?

One way to do this is to discover the beliefs that guide your life.

To find them, pay close attention to your language, especially when you say with certainty that you cannot or someone cannot do something or that something is impossible to accomplish.

Then start writing down these beliefs and one by one try to challenge them.

For example, suppose your belief is that at your age you cannot get a job.

You can identify all the facts that support this belief and then find other facts that contradict it.

This will reduce the negative impact this belief has on your ability to take action to accomplish your most important projects.

To further explore the topic of beliefs, I invite you to read my article on how to overcome limiting beliefs.

Now I suggest you move on to the next tip, which is to attribute a different meaning to reality.

2 – Give a different meaning to events

You may have experienced a major emotional block capable of completely paralyzing you and preventing you from creating the life you deserve.

Whenever an event occurs in our lives, we unconsciously attach meaning to the behaviors of others, to our own behavior, to the results we achieve, etc.

As we have previously seen with beliefs, we are very rarely aware of how we interpret our experiences in life.

If you are struggling in an area of your life and you do tend to procrastinate, the meaning you give to the situation is likely to have a negative impact on your motivation.

If you want to remotivate yourself, it is essential to identify the meaning you give to the situation and change it so that it becomes a new source of intrinsic motivation.

For example, suppose you go to a job interview and the recruiter decides not to accept your application.

If you consider that this outcome is because you do not have enough skills to find a job you like, you will feel very unmotivated and have much less desire to persist in your job search.

On the other hand, if you tell yourself that you did not get the job because you did not prepare sufficiently for the interview, you will be more motivated to keep improving to become even more effective and convincing in your presentation.

Once again, it is not the reality of the facts that influences your thoughts and actions. It is the meaning you give to what happens to you that determines your likelihood of long-term success or failure.

If you want to change your life for the better, you need to give more motivating meaning to your personal and professional experiences.

Now I suggest you move on to the next piece of advice, which is to change your habits.

3 – Adapt your habits to your goals

As you have already read in my previous articles, motivation is not always enough to enable us to act appropriately every day.

Our habits can become our worst enemies or our best allies, depending on the decisions we make.

We all have bad and good habits. Your goal is not to strive for perfection, because this may block you further and increase your tendency to procrastinate.

The important point is to learn to identify negative habits, that is, those that have an adverse impact on your life.

But changing your habits and maintaining them over time takes time, patience and proven strategies.

This is especially true when the habit has lasted for many years. In the latter case, it has probably become a kind of emotional highway in your brain that reassures you.

If a habit exists, it is because it somehow provides you with something positive, at least in the immediate future.

For these reasons, I recommend that you identify habits related to your mental block and find the corresponding benefits.

Next, create new habits that allow you to maintain the same benefits while avoiding the drawbacks.

Then use implementation intentions to facilitate your behavioral change.

Implementation intentions are behavioral instructions such as if…then that expand a person’s behavioral repertoire and increase the likelihood that an individual will change his or her behavior in the desired direction.

You can combine implementation intentions with mental contrast aimed at identifying all the factors that might prevent you from following a particular behavior and finding solutions to these problems in advance.

Now I suggest you move on to the next tip, which is to measure the price of your psychological block.

4 – Measure the cost of your mental block

Every decision has more or less important consequences in every individual’s life.

Now you want to do something to overcome your psychological block because so far it has cost you very much.

But despite this, you are unable to change.

You cannot do it because you have not estimated the price of your inaction.

How much money have you lost?

How many opportunities have you missed?

How much pain have you experienced?

Take some time to go over the emotions you have felt in your life because of this mental block.

Be specific and write down all your losses in detail.

Now make the same assessment by thinking about the price you will pay in the future if you do not change.

Again, be specific and do not minimize the impact your block will have on your personal and professional life.

Next, plan and implement an action each week that will help you get rid of the emotional block.
