How to stay organized and be successful in college: 7 effective tips

In this article, I share with you how to stay organized and be successful in college.

These are tips from my experience as a college student in the fields of psychology and marketing.

Before I get to the tips, I’d like to remind you that you can benefit from the expertise of a college coaching service for college students to make it easier to succeed in your studies.

Let’s get started with my recommendations.

1 – Set specific goals for yourself

If your goal is to pass all of your exams, that is not a specific goal.

A specific goal might be: I want to pass all of my first semester exams with a A grade.

Setting your goal allows you to start thinking about an action plan that will allow you to succeed in college.

If you don’t know how to set a goal, I suggest you read my article on how to set goals, achieve them and be truly happy.

But why is setting goals so important to you?

Simply because research shows that people who set goals correctly and take regular actions to achieve them have a higher probability of reaching them.

Before I move on to the organizational aspect of your studies, I want to talk about another essential aspect of being successful in college, and that is self-confidence.

2 – Build self-confidence and self-esteem

Research shows that self-confidence and self-esteem have a very important effect on success in different areas of life and also on academic success.

In order to build self-confidence, you can follow several strategies but perhaps the most important is to become aware of your innate talents or abilities.

You can’t think of being successful in your studies if you just copy the strategies of other students.

You need to create a personalized organizational method to be successful in your studies.

So take the time to mentally go back in your student memories to understand which strategies have worked best for you in the past.

By focusing on your strengths and on strategies that have already proven to be effective, you will be able to pass your exams more easily and experience your first academic success.

At the same time, it is important to protect your self-esteem by learning to evaluate yourself more kindly if the results you get are not up to your expectations.

It is also essential to learn to put the opinions of some teachers and other students into perspective.

Learn to praise yourself and appreciate you more all the time and even more in challenging times.

3 – Study when you feel energetic

If you want to be successful in your studies, you need to focus your attention on classes at times of the day or evening when you can perform at your best.

This requires identifying your chronotype, which is the time of the day when you have your best physical and mental energy.

To help you understand what your chronotype is, I suggest you take a free test.

You will see that the simple fact of adapting your study rhythm to your innate genetic predispositions will allow you to obtain better results with less effort.

Other aspects such as diet, sleep and stress management also play an important role in your ability to use your energy to the fullest.

If you are having difficulties with your sleep, I suggest you read the article on how to overcome sleep procrastination.

4 – Adapt the way you learn to your personal perceptual patterns

If it is true that we process all information using every perceptual channel, it is also true that each individual uses either hearing, vision or touch more often to receive and process the information they receive.

If you don’t know what your innate preference is, you can combine all of these perceptual channels and perhaps include others if it helps you learn better during your college or remote studies.

But if you already know your preferred communication and learning modality, I advise you to organize and structure your learning according to your uniqueness.

This way, you will get the results you are looking for in less time.

You will become more productive and it will also help you build more self-confidence.

5 – Use sleep to boost your learning

If you want to memorize difficult concepts or information from a class that you are not too interested in, but still need to learn to pass your exams and studies, I advise you to use sleep to hack your performance.

At night, before going to bed or before taking a nap to recover your energy, review exclusively the concepts, diagrams, formulas, etc. that you are not able to memorize as well as you want to.

Repeat the review 2 or 3 times using your main perceptual modality and go to bed.

When you wake up, you will see that your knowledge has improved greatly.

6 – Spend your study time on all your subjects

There are some subjects that you are more passionate about, while there are others that interest us much less.

However, succeeding in your studies requires you to organize yourself for all these subjects.

In order to be as organized as possible, I advise you to plan your revision moments in your agenda and to check if you allocate enough time to all the subjects.

The goal is to have roughly the same progression for all subjects.

It is also important to revise in order to have sufficient knowledge of all subjects.

If you spend too much time learning the early chapters, you may not learn the later ones well enough.

In summary, once you have a sufficient knowledge of the entire program for all subjects, you can then focus on deepening your knowledge of other subjects if you have the time.

7 – Make time for yourself

Being successful in your studies also requires that you make time for your passions and in general for any activity that contributes to your fulfillment.

When you plan time in your schedule, also plan for those moments of well-being and relaxation.

If you don’t, you won’t be able to release enough stress and this will have a negative impact on your health but also on your studies.

Don’t make excuses for not spending time for yourself because you have too many subjects to review.

If you follow the above tips, you will have enough time to enjoy the activities that make you feel good and you will succeed in your studies while maintaining your physical and mental balance.
